In Alabama it is legal to drive a motor vehicle while you are blindfold. Most of the people in our nation most likely would not decide to drive with a blindfold on. Yet, the Alabama state government needs to have power so it passed the "no driving while blindfold" law. Alabama is not the only state with laws that seem useless. In California community leaders passed an ordinance that makes it illegal for anyone to try to stop a child from playfully jumping over puddles of water. The fine for such a crime is fifty dollars and up to ten days in jail. Once again a government decided it didn't have enough power and thought that it might as well impose a new law to show its "immense" power over the people. The human resources department is broken down into sections and there are vice presidents over each of these respective sections that would report to a senior vice-president of HR groups. System Software And Application Software This term is used to describe programs that enable the computer to work and coordinate the various parts of the computer system to make it run efficiently. It controls the operation of the computer as it tells the hardware what to do and how and when to do it. It is the base for applications software as they cannot work without system software Operating systems are an example of it. The operating system is the program that actually makes the computer works. Application software This term is used for programs that enable the user to do a specific task such as creating a document, producing invoices and using database. It is used once the operating system has been loaded. It can be educational programs, entertainment programs and etc. Operating System It is the software that actually makes the computer work. An example of it is Microsoft Windows, Macintosh Operating system (Mac OS), Linux and Unix. These are some functions of the operating system: Boot up the computer. Control the hardware such as printer, scanner, monitor, keyboard and mouse. Controlling features such as formatting disks, saving files and retrieving them form the hard disk. Provide the base for the applications software to be launched. Allows the applications software to use the hardware. applications Software As discussed before, applications software are programs that help the user to do a specific task and here are some types of application software: Word processing programs: They are used to create documents such as letter, reports, memos and etc. An example is Microsoft Word. Spreadsheet programs: They are used to analyze and summarize numerical data. They are in accounting environments to prepare balance sheets and financial reports. . An example is Microsoft Excel. Database programs: they are used to organize and manage large quantities of data. . An example is Microsoft Access. Presentation graphics programs: They are used to organize numeric data and text in a suitable format to be displayed to a group of people. . An example is Microsoft PowerPoint. Photo editing programs: They are used to edit images such as changing the size of images and adjust the colors of images. . An example is adobe Photoshop. Desktop publishing programs: They are used to prepare high quality printed material e.g. flyers, magazines, posters and books. . An example is Microsoft Publisher. Internet Web Browsers: They are used to locate and display information at Web sites. An example is MS Internet Explorer. User Interface Users interact with software in many. Some users write the commands that they need to do, other presses certain keys from the keyboard to do a certain task and some prefer use the mouse. Command Syntax: Early user interface required users to type exactly instructions with specific rules to do a certain task. The users didnt like this way because they have to be very careful in writing the commands and of course they have to remember it. Shortcut Keystrokes: They enable the users to use the commands through pressing certain keys from the keyboard. This way may be hard to be remembered. Graphical User Interface (GUI): It refers to the graphics screens that make it easier for users to interact with programs through using icons, mouse, drop down menus and windows. Types of networks There are three types of network which are: Local Area Network (LAN). Wireless Area Network (WLAN). Wide Area Network (WAN). 1. Local Area Network (LAN) A LAN is a system where computers are connected together within a company or organization to enable people share files and resources such as printers. A LAN can be within the same building or within a group of buildings close to each other. 2. Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) Computers are connected together through high frequency radio signals. They are used in many office buildings, coffee shops and even at homes. No wiring is required between the computers and the peripherals (peripheral device is any device that can attach to the computer such as speakers, printers and scanners). 3. Wide Area Network (WAN) Computers are connected together over a wide area such as between towns or countries. Communication between computers can be done through telephone lines, fiber optics and radio links or satellites. The internet is an example of it. Client / server computers A client computer is the computer that needs data from another computer known as a server. Entertainment tool (e.g. playing games, listening to music and watching films and video clips). Information is available 24 hours per day and 7 days per week. Services: Many services are available through the internet like shopping, hotel reservations and paying pills. E-commerce: Doing business, selling and buying products and services through the internet. E-learning: Using the internet for education. Downloading software from the internet. Download and upload Download means to transfer data from a server to a local computer while upload means to transfer data from a local computer to a server. Examples: Download programs, songs and games from the internet to the computer. Design a website then upload it from the computer to the internet to be used by others. Transfer rate Data is transmitted in collections of bits or characters. The transmission speed of data is measured by the Baud rate which means how many bits can be transferred each second. Bps: It means bits per second. 8 bits = 1 character. Kbps: It means kilobits per second (i.e. 1000 bits per second). A 56.6Kbps modem technically transmits 56,600 bits per second of data. The modem is a device that allows computers to transmit data over telephone lines. mbps It means megabits per second (i.e. 1,000,000 bits per second). Internet connection services Computers are connected to internet in many ways. Here are the types of connections: Dialup connection: It uses telephone lines to connect to the internet. A modem is used to dial a telephone number and connect to an Internet service Provider (ISP). This type of connection is inexpensive compared to other connections. The phone line is busy when the user uses the internet, meaning the user cannot make or receive calls when he is online. Data transfer over dial-up is slower compared to other connections. Internet Service Providers (ISPs) are companies that allow the users to connect to the internet. Broadband connection: It allows faster transfer of information. This type of connection is available through a phone line (ADSL), cables, satellite, mobile phone and wireless networks. Asynchronous Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL) broadband: It uses a modem and the telephone line system to connect a computer to Internet. The ADSL modem is different from a dial-up modem. Through ADSL, a user can make calls and use the internet at the same time. ADSL connection is faster and expensive than dial-up connection. Wireless broadband: It uses radio transmitters and receivers to connect computers. Many public areas and organizations provide this connection which is known as Wi-Fi. Nowadays this connection is used at home and supported by many phones. Cable broadband: It uses a modem and the cabling infrastructure used for cable TV to link a computer to Internet. The cable modem uses the same cabling infrastructure and connection to your home as cable TV. The cable modem connects to the computer by a local area network (LAN) card. Cable connection is faster than dial-up connection and the cost of it is similar to an ADSL connection. Satellite broadband: It is an Internet connection that requires the installation of a special satellite dish. Edna Oââ¬â¢Brienââ¬â¢s Country Girls Trilogy :: Country Girls Trilogy
Edna Oââ¬â¢Brienââ¬â¢s Country Girls Trilogy à à à In all honesty, I chose to read The Country Girls Trilogy by Edna Oââ¬â¢Brien because it was the only text that I could get my hands on. After reading it though, Iââ¬â¢m glad I had the luck of choosing it. I realized, while reading the trilogy, that throughout my course of study, I have not read very many female authors. I may have read a few short stories along the way, but most books that I have read for classes and for pleasure have been written by men. I saw the difference in writing styles as I read the first paragraph of the book and immediately liked the change of pace and detail-oriented style. I also found that I really connected with the main characters, Caithleen and Baba, whose real name is Bridget. I found it interesting that I invested such interest in two characters whose personalities are so different from my own. Caithleen was the narrator in the first two books, and I found that I connected with her most because of her details and innocence. The t rilogy represents three phases of these womenââ¬â¢s lives from their girlhood, to losing loves and the trials of marriage. Through it all, their interesting friendship changes according to the events in their lives until a sad and untimely end. Iââ¬â¢m not sure that that I would want a friendship like Caithleen and Babaââ¬â¢s, but at least that had each other in the end, when the rest of the world seemed to have forgotten them. The excerpt in Colm Toibinââ¬â¢s anthology, The Penguin book of Irish Fiction, is from the first book in Oââ¬â¢Brienââ¬â¢s trilogy called The Country Girls. For purposes of this paper, I will discuss the excerpt itself, and then the rest of the first book of Oââ¬â¢Brienââ¬â¢s trilogy. à à à The Excerpt from The Country Girls was taken from chapter fourteen. In this passage, Baba and Caithleen have just moved to Dublin to live on their own. They moved into a boarding house run by a German couple and the girls feel as if they are finally living their lives. Baba is in search of a rich man to take care of her so that she no longer has to deal with the little people in life. She drags Caithleen, who goes by Cait, to dances and bars in hopes of finding whatever she can get.

Copper Mountain Essay -- Environmental Issues
Itââ¬â¢s a sunny October afternoon and Iââ¬â¢m listening to the breeze gently rustle the tree tops above me. I look down into the creek as I sit here munching on some cashews, and I see trout gliding effortlessly through the crystal-clear water. I revel in how incredibly lush the area isâ⬠¦although itââ¬â¢s been a dry summer the ground is still moist, plants are bright and colorful, and wildlife is abound. After I finish my snack and tuck my trash away into my backpack, I continue my hike up this parcel of land that is may soon become barren with towers of steel and wire draping the landscape. I wonder to myself what will become of these fish, or the fresh clean water that runs into the Reeder Reservoir, the source of Ashlandââ¬â¢s drinking water. According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), ski area expansions are the most ecological damaging task that an area can undertake. In a plan revision for the White River National Forest in Colorado, regarding the Copper Mountain Ski Resort expansion, the EPA hammers that point home when they say that ââ¬Å"â⬠¦no other land management prescription on the Forest directly results in more stream-water depletion, wetland impacts, air pollution, permanent vegetation change, or permanent habitat lossâ⬠¦ more wetland impacts and stream depletions resulted from ski area expansion and improvement than from all other Forest management activities combined, including many direct and indirect impacts that are permanent (irreversible and irretrievable).â⬠Meanwhile, skier numbers nationally have only increased just two percent since 1978(source). Which begs the question, why have ski area sizes more than doubled in acreage to the tune of 107%(source)? Mt. Ashlandââ¬â¢s future expansion surely isnââ¬â¢t needed due t... ...ts past development and expansion of the Copper Mountain ski area as major factor in the degradation of the watershed and local water quality. Impacts include: increased peak flows, increased water temperature, increased erosion and sediment transport, and decrease flow due to snowmaking activities. The USDA has taken exhaustive steps to help mitigate the damage caused by the expansion at a great financial cost to taxpayers. The USDA has had to redesign all stream crossings to allow for higher stream flows and to withstand expected floods. They also performed physical modifications of the stream patterns and stream geometry to improve long term stream health. Environmental Scorecard Concerned locals first brought attention to the Environmental Scorecard in November of 2008 after an article published in the local newspaper, Ashland Daily Tidings, appeared.

DBQ: Slavery Essay
In the 1840ââ¬â¢s slavery was very common because of the booming cotton industry in the south, slaves were cheap and skillful, and there were plenty of them to go around, hence the reason the southern economy relied on them so heavily. However, because the North was economically sound and economically more advanced than the south, they saw the wrong behind slavery. Slavery in the south was so common that southerners began to grow used to the idea of slaves, and therefore placed most of their economy and way of life on that of a slave filled state. They saw slavery as an opportunity for the African Americans to make a life in America. ââ¬Å"In all respects the comforts of our slaves are greatly superior to those of the English [factory] operatives, or the Irish and continental peasantry, to say nothing o the millions of paupers crowded together in those loathsome receptacles of starving humanity, the public poorhouses. . . . From this excess of labor, this actual want, and these distressing cares, our slaves are entirely exempted.â⬠(Document A) Because southerners felt that what they were doing for and to slaves was beneficial for the southern and slave communities they saw no wrong in what they were doing, and therefore had no reason to stop slavery. When slaves worked on a plantation they had free health care, housing, and food, all things that were necessary and cost money, something that African Americans would not have had a lot of if they had come to America as immigrants. During that time there was still racial stereotypes and judgment, white land owning Americans thought of themselves as superior to African Americans and many other minority races that immigrated to America. African Americans would not have been taken seriously in the south even if slavery had not existed, they were a minority, and to the south minorities were the dirt beneath their shoes. Because the southââ¬â¢s main staple crop was cotton, and cotton was not a cash crop, the use of slaves made cotton prosperous. The south relied on slave labor to make money out of cotton, with slaves working the fields for little to no pay, most of the money made out of the cotton industry was circulated through the white landowning male community, which made up a very large majority of the south. slave labor being so cheap, and a large amount of slaves could be acquired at one time, made it easy for the south to place everything on slaves and cotton. William Harper in a Memoir on Slavery, 1837, stated that ââ¬Å"the cultivation of the great staple crops [cotton] cannot be carried on in any portion of our country where there are not slaves.â⬠This statement shows that slave labor was the largest contributor to the southern economy during the 1830ââ¬â¢s, and therefore a reason to fight for slave labor. In a speech that Abraham Lincoln gave in Peoria, Illinois in October f 1854 he stated that ââ¬Å"In our greedy chase to make profit of the Negro, let us let us beware lest we ââ¬Ëcancel and tear in piecesââ¬â¢ even the white manââ¬â¢s charter of freedom.â⬠This statement was a warning given by Lincoln, he thought of slavery as unprofitable and unsuited to Americaââ¬â¢s growing industrial and manufacturing industries. Hinton Helper, in The Impending Crisis, 1857, had a similar view on slave labor in the south, but a different idea on how ti abolish it. ââ¬Å"What about Southern commerce? Is it not almost entirely tributary to the commerce of the North? Are we not dependent on New York, Philadelphia, Boston,and Cincinnati for nearly every article of merchandise, whether foreign or domestic? Where are our ships, our mariners, our naval architects? . . . We must begin to feed on a more substantial diet than that of pro-slavery politics.â⬠Helperââ¬â¢s book The Impending Crisis was banned in the south and used as anti-slavery propaganda by republicans in the north. He believed that landowning white men in the south who did not own slaves were the key to the abolitionism of slavery, but he was also racist throughout The Impending Crisis. In the above quote he states that the northââ¬â¢s economic prosperity comes from the reliance on ports and major cities Slavery was the southââ¬â¢s main source of economic prosperity, therefore the south would have done anything to keep slavery alive. However, the north did not believe in slavery because it was unjust and unneeded. Abolitionists fought to destroy slavery, but the south fought to keep it alive.

Romeo and Juliet- Dilemmas
Out of the frying pan into the fire: The cause and effect Friar Lawrenceââ¬â¢s dilemma, in William Shakespeareââ¬â¢s play, Romeo and Juliet. A dilemma is a very unfortunate thing that no individual should ever have to face. A dilemma is a very tough choice in which there are many choices, all of which usually have bad outcomes.William Shakespeare gives us many examples of a dilemma throughout his play of, Romeo and Juliet, some of the dilemmaââ¬â¢s Shakespeare shows us, is when Friar Laurence has to decide whether to marry Romeo and Juliet, how he has to decide how to get Romeo and Juliet back together after Romeo is banished, and finally how his choice leads to the death of the two star crossed lovers.Through friar Laurenceââ¬â¢s example, William Shakespeare demonstrates that when faced with a dilemma go with a simple choice, because when ideas become complex there is more room for error. Initially we see Friar Laurence as a man of the church who disapproves of Romeoâ⠬â¢s love for Rosaline, but also disapproves of him changing whom he loves very quickly. Friar Laurence tells Romeo that he is going through love to quickly, (Holy Saint Francis!What a change is here! Is Rosaline that thou didst love so dear, So soon forsaken? Young menââ¬â¢s love then lies Not truly in their hearts, but in their eyesâ⬠2. 3. 66-69) This is only some of the wisdom spoken by Friar Laurence to young Romeo in William Shakespeareââ¬â¢s Romeo and Juliet on the decision made by him to wed thirteen year old Juliet in such hastiness after shedding his love for Rosaline.Romeo sought after instruction through the wisdom of Friar Laurence when he first met Juliet as there was no one else he could turn to, especially when the couple decided they wanted to get married. At that point in the play, it became apparent to Friar Laurence that if he were to marry Romeo and Juliet that it could abolish the hatred between the Capuletââ¬â¢s and the Montagueââ¬â¢s, and con cludes that he will help Romeo and Juliet plot their marriage in secret, hoping that it will bring their familyââ¬â¢s together.However, after Friar Laurence marries Romeo and Juliet, he is confronted with the obstacle of Romeo being banished, which causes him too struggle as he seeks to find a way to keep Romeo and Juliet together. Juliet convinces Friar Laurence to help her by coming up with a plan to bring Romeo and Juliet back together, (God joined my heart and Romeo's, thou our hands; And ere this hand, by thee to Romeo's sealed, Shall be the label to another deedâ⬠¦Could to no issue of true honor bring! Be not so long to speak!I long to die, If what thou speak'st, speak not of remedy! 4. 1. 56-58 ; 66-68). In the discussion Juliet blames Friar Laurence for marrying her to Romeo, and blames him for Romeo being banished, she tells him it is his entire fault and he needs to fix it, thus evoking Friar Laurence to come up with a plan to help her spend time with Romeo. Consequ ently when Friar Laurence comes up with a complex plan, when something that Juliet said sparks an idea, (O, bid me leap, rather than marry Paris, 4. . 78) Juliet tells him that she would rater die than marry Paris, which brings him to the idea of faking Julietââ¬â¢s death. He believes, with a draft that puts Juliet to sleep, and makes her look dead, her family will put her in the family vault. Then as a second stage of the plan a letter would be given to Romeo telling him to come to the burial vault, where they will meet, and then after she awakes they will be able to run off together, and live somewhere else happily ever after.But the complexity of father Laurence's plan leads to a miscommunication, which causes the death of both star crossed lovers. Romeo fails to receive Friar Laurence's letter and receives the news of Juliet's death from a relative, but the relative does not know of the plan behind her death. Romeo goes to visit the burial vault, and kills himself over Juliet 's seemingly dead body, soon after she awakes and then kills herself once she realizes Romeo is dead.This is why a dilemma is so complicated and why it should not be forced upon anyone. As demonstrated by William Shakespeare in his play Romeo and Juliet, a dilemma is a choice with much room for error and needs to be gone through with much precaution. William Shakespeare saw the need to put dilemmas in his play and understood the importance of choices that seemed like every day choices, but had hard decisions involved, choices in which the power to change the whole story line is held.These choices are shown by William Shakespeare's character Friar Laurence, as he has to decide whether to marry Romeo and Juliet, he has to decide how get Romeo and Juliet back together after Romeo is banished, and finally when his choices lead to the death of Romeo and Juliet.
